The Education and Exhibits Coordinator supports the Carver County Historical Society (CCHS) mission to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Carver County. The Coordinator additionally supports the Mission and Vision of the CCHS regarding the Andrew Peterson farm, to preserve and interpret the Andrew Peterson farm through the lens of Minnesota’s rich immigrant and agricultural history. The farm and historically significant diaries of Andrew Peterson will be used to encourage visitors of all ages to discover our diverse heritage and to understand how the past shapes the present – and the future. More particularly, the Exhibits and Education Coordinator plans and implements education programs and designs and implements displays to disseminate historical information to students and adults and to arouse interest in the past through these programs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Visit area schools throughout the year to present classroom programs using local history to teach larger historical themes
  • Create new school programs that are useful and relevant to area classes, with input from schools, Education Committee, and teachers
  • Plan, implement, and lead quarterly family days or family day trips (reservation-only events that focus on a theme or place in Carver County)
  • Plan, implement, and lead summer day camp(s) (half- or full-day camps that have an historic theme)
  • Along with Curator of Collections, partner with an area classroom learning Minnesota history to create a student exhibit for the CCHS
  • Recruit, supervise, and retain volunteers
  • Update and monitor social media platforms
  • Greet the public, assist museum visitors, and help researchers in the library when needed
  • Publicize roundtable events, exhibit openings, family programs, day camps, and other events and programs as they arise
  • Set up and prepare for all programs at the museum and in the schools
  • Assist the Fundraising Committee and the Executive Director with planning and implementing fundraisers
  • Compile and edit the quarterly newsletter
  • Offer a minimum of two programs or events at the Andrew Peterson farm per year
  • Design and organize the Carver County Fair exhibit in our log granary at the fairgrounds.

Exhibits

  • Oversee the museum’s local history exhibit program, including the following:
  • Semi-permanent museum exhibits
  • Temporary museum exhibits
  • Traveling exhibits produced in-house
  • Move exhibits annually between the five (or six) venues
  • Introduce one new exhibit into the rotation each year
  • Traveling exhibits from other institutions
  • Special, often event specific, exhibits•    Conduct or supervise research on exhibit topics and write, edit, proofread and produce exhibit texts•    Fabricate exhibit systems and object mounts, prepare galleries and produce graphics•    Assist affiliate historical societies as needed

  • •    Design exhibits, taking into account varying learning styles, ADA requirements, visitor safety and artifact conservation needs
  • •    Collaborate with other museum staff to develop exhibit work plans, deadlines and budgets

Requirements

  • Knowledge of teaching practices, lesson planning, and historic research
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Ability to think creatively; write programs for a variety of ages; relate to people of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds
  • Work with visitors/students of all ages
  • Be flexible
  • Work one 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday shift each month
  • Work within the constraints of a budget
  • Working knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office programs
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn marketing and advertising
  • Exhibit design, including ADA requirements
  • Exhibit fabrication, including materials technology, e.g., woodworking, surface finishes, and acrylics
  • Desktop publishing, including Photoshop and Publisher
  • Artifact mount construction
  • Willing and able to work as a team and as a team member
  •  

Other Skills/Abilities

  • B.A. in History, education, or museum studies
  • 2-5 years’ experience
  • Valid driver’s license
