Provide management and supervision of the paint and prop shop for the School of Theatre and Dance and Porthouse, Wright-Curtis, Stump and Black Box Theatres and programs. Reports to Director, School of Theatre and Dance.

Additional Basic Function - if applicable:

The School of Theatre and Dance invites an engaging and collaborative individual to join a creative progressive staff and faculty for a 12-month staff position in Scenic Art and Props starting August 1, 2022. The School produces nine productions annually including Porthouse Theatre, Kent State University's professional summer theatre.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:

Oversee / teach scenic practicums and provide advice and assistance to independent studies students.

Develop and maintain the paint and prop shop budget.

Maintain paint shop production calendar.

Oversee and coordinate inventory; order supplies, equipment; manage and maintain consumable resources and supplies, including major purchases, coordinate donation intakes and negotiate rental packages of properties stock.

Maintain and repair equipment.

Oversee and maintain prop shop and paint facilities and storage spaces including equipment.

Collaborate and consult with faculty regarding future equipment repairs and purchases, allocation of equipment and labor resources and production budgets.

Provide supervision of graduate and undergraduate students; also orient and supervise students and staff employed by Porthouse Theatre.

Engage in scenic painting, coordinate and assign scenic and properties artisans.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Additional Examples of Duties - if applicable:

  • Supervises the Props & Paint Shop graduate assistants, practicum students, and lab students, in the painting of scenery as well as the construction and finishing of the props.
  • Maintains equipment and orders supplies for the Paint & Props Shop.
  • Attends production meetings, necessary rehearsals, technical rehearsals, additional work calls, and strikes.
  • Oversees the painting and props design/construction process.
  • Actively and positively contributes to the mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students. The candidate will collaborate effectively with a diverse student body and faculty.
  • Works closely with all Design, Technology, and Production faculty and staff.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Theatre or related field, plus 2 years of professional experience in scenic art and prop management.

Or a combination of professional experience in theatre and dance production and scenic artistry equivalent to a minimum of 6 years progressively responsible experience to include the finishing of scenic and prop elements in a wide variety of theatrical styles.

License/Certification:

Knowledge Of:

Theatre and dance properties production and processes *
Entertainment industry, manufacturers and resources
Budgeting
Scenic painting techniques and processes
Safe work practices
Personal computer applications

Skill In:

Scenic painting techniques, such as trompe-l'oeil, spraying, sculpting, and cartooning *
Interpersonal, written and verbal communication *

Ability To:

Manage people *

Preferred Qualifications - if applicable:

MFA preferred.
  • Demonstrated props artisan skills such as, but not limited to, woodworking, welding, sewing, upholstery, electronics, molding, casting, painting, and Photoshop.
  • Demonstrated charge scenic artist skills such as, but not limited to: color matching and mixing, resource budgeting, cartooning, drop layout, faux finishes, and trompe l'oeil.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Work in office classroom and theatrical shop environment. Occasional exposure to fumes, loud noise, dust, dirt, potentially dangerous equipment.
