The A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland is seeking a dynamic, hands-on leader to spearhead the operations of the newly formed Maryland Autonomous Technologies Research and Innovation and eXploration (MATRIX) Lab at University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland (USMSM). Reporting to the Director of Research Innovation and Outreach, the Lab Manager is responsible for the execution of the Director’s strategic plan for all operations in the MATRIX.


The MATRIX Lab Manager manages and supports the administration and operations of the research labs in the new Southern Maryland Autonomous Research and Technology (SMART) Building at USMSM. Serving as the expert for the research facility and the equipment for the Clark School at the MATRIX, the position actively works with researchers and students from academia, and industry and government agencies to ensure safe operation of equipment, provide additional skills instruction, and advise on research design and construction, including issues such as selection of components and applications.
The Lab Manager supports research activities across the USMSM campus by working with researchers to help design and then fabricate components for various applications. In addition to the MATRIX, the Lab Manager will work with the education component of the SMART Building and the lab manager supporting their equipment and facilities. The position coordinates and supports academic courses and extracurricular projects that utilize the MATRIX and hires, trains, and oversees a variety of graduate and undergraduate research assistants/students.

Requirements

Education:
• Bachelor’s degree

Experience:
• A minimum of 5 years of relevant full-time experience in a professional technology industry.
• Expertise-level experience in the use and maintenance of machine tools and prototyping equipment including, but not limited to hand tools, power tools, drill presses, band saws, lathes, knee mills, TIG welders, CNC milling machines, and 3D printers.
• Supervisory experience in a shop environment.
• Advanced experience using Solidworks, MasterCam, and/or CAD/CAM software.
• Experience establishing and implementing safety and training procedures.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Aptitude in mechatronics systems and demonstrated ability to resolve challenging technical problems.
• Detail-oriented with excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, communication, and oral and written presentation skills.
• Ability to analyze and adapt to ambiguous situations, develop plans, and ensure successful and efficient implementation.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently, and with a team, on complex projects and demonstrate competency and diplomacy.
• Ability to analyze, create, and optimize processes and procedures, when necessary.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.
• Ability to work and problem solve in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment, prioritizing tasks, thinking proactively, and using good judgment and experience to make decisions and maintain deadlines.
• Strong skills to build and maintain working relationships with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and complex environment.
• Ability to display professionalism in all communications with university stakeholders.
• Proficient in working with Microsoft Office tools.


Preferences:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or closely related discipline.
• Breadth in skills and/or experience across multiple disciplines of engineering.
• Previous experience with, and knowledge of, mechanical design, fabrication, testing, and troubleshooting.
• Experience teaching and working with students in both formal and informal settings to train them to safely and effectively use machine tools and research equipment including, but not limited to hand tools, power tools, drill presses, band saws, lathes, knee mills, CNC milling machines, TIG welding, woodworking, water-jet cutting, 3D printers, and/or laser cutters.
• Supervisory experience in a college/university setting, preferably of a student or research shop.
• Ability to execute multiple projects, meet scheduled milestones, and meet deliverables on time with high quality outputs.
• Expertise in the design and fabrication of research apparatus based on verbal and/or written instructions.
• Organizational and budgeting skills to run a shop, prioritize work, handle multiple requests simultaneously from a broad range of customers.
